Your Moontime Magic offers an empowering view on periods by illustrating the connection between girls, their body’s cycles, nature and creativity:

"Every month, your body begins to prepare itself for a possible pregnancy. Even though pregnancy is not something young girls are ready to prepare for, menstruation is how the body develops and gets ready for a possible pregnancy someday. Following the natural cycle and rhythm of menstruation can support you as you prepare for all kinds of other newness in your life: new interests, new dreams, and new visions! " -Maureen Theresa Smith in Your Moontime Magic

Praise for Your Moontime Magic

This wonderful book has the potential to be as classic as Our Bodies Ourselves was for other generations. I purchased this for our daughter who is nearing puberty, and am so glad I did! It’s the perfect gift, and ideal for parents (or older sisters/mentors) to read along with their daughters.

I love author Maureen’s comforting tone. She answers any question a young girl might have about getting her period, and provides tons of suggestions for both parents and girls, including a kit to carry with them (including a note for the school nurse) and practical suggestions in case she gets her period for the first time at school or away from home (like always having a sweatshirt to wrap around your waist).

In my opinion, this book goes one step further than other books on the topic by the loads of suggestions including creative ways to honor a girl’s first period, products, food ideas and recipes, and alternative things to try like aromatherapy that can really help a girl to take ownership of her own experience in a positive way. There are so many great ideas here I never would have thought of on my own, I’m glad I read the book just in time!

This book has really gotten me thinking about how to make the experience as positive as possible for my own daughter. The best part of this book is the wealth of personal stories woven throughout not just from the author but by other women as well. Girls will like the quizzes and journal prompts too.

Maureen’s calm voice is like a true friend, helping both parent and girl to feel comfortable and excited about this new chapter in a girl’s life.

If you have a daughter or family member nearing her first period, or if you know another parent who has a young daughter, my advice would be to buy it as a gift. It’s so helpful and just the right size for a young girl to keep close at hand for when she might need it.

I have two girls, a tween and a teen. This book has been a joy for me as a mom to read sections with my tween as she begins to navigate what her period will be like and how to prepare for it. I left it on my older teenager’s desk, and she has been reading it.

It is so thorough that I know she will learn so much more then I was ever able to share with her. It is an amazing guide to navigating the monthly menses complete with helpful details without leaving young girls feeling ‘cringy’ (the term my younger daughter used to use about the subject), instead they learn to celebrate this time of the month!

The author gives wonderful sections in each chapter to make a girl’s ‘moontime’ special. Chapters include journaling prompts, recipes, empowering ideas and dream therapy, crafts, stories of amazing women, and my favorite- stories of cultures that celebrate a girl’s change into womanhood instead of encouraging it to be silenced as it is in our culture.

The book is a delightful read that emphasizes the awesomeness of being a girl and becoming a woman. It is written in a soft, inspiring tone and is a joy to read.

I highly recommend it for anyone raising girls in our culture today. A must have.
